Iron Oxide Nanoparticle Interactions with Lipid Bilayers in a Magnetic Field
Iron oxide nanoparticles are one of the first nanomaterials to be approved for use in the body. However, research into particle binding and incorporation to, as well as destabilization of, lipid and cell membranes is in its infancy despite its importance. Here, we propose to study the structure and destabilisation of the lipid bilayer in contact with IONPs using neutron reflection. The use of a magnetic adsorbent allows us to study the effect of an increasing static magnetic field perpendicular to the interface to either attract or repel the adsorbent from the lipid bilayer. The effect of an induced localised heating of the bilayer with an oscillating magnetic field will also be studied.
