Nach "Computers in Education" (vgl. Referenznr. 2647) und "Reading Literacy" (vgl. Referenznr. 1160) beteiligte sich die Schweiz zum drittenmal an einem Projekt der IEA (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement). Die Beteiligung an TIMSS (Third International Mathematics and Science Study), verlief im Rahmen des Nationalen Forschungsprogramms 33 ("Wirksamkeit unserer Bildungssysteme"). In TIMSS werden die Bildungssysteme von etwa 40 Ländern verglichen, darunter fast alle Länder Europas. Im internationalen Vergleich geht es vorerst darum, Wirkungen von Merkmalen der Bildungssysteme wie Schulstrukturen, Klassengrösse, Lehrpläne usw. auf die Leistungen in Mathematik und Naturwissenschaften zu erheben. Die internationale Untersuchung wurde in diesem schweizerischen Projekt ergänzt und für national relevante Fragestellungen genutzt. Es wurde zwischen verschiedenen Schultypen (z. B. Berufsschulen vs. Mittelschulen, Maturitätstyp vs. Maturitätstyp, Berufsmittelschule vs. Berufsschule) und zwischen verschiedenen Kantonen oder Regionen verglichen. Mit dem "plus" (TIMSS+) wollten die Forscherinnen und Forscher darauf hinweisen, dass ihr Interesse nicht nur der Schule und der Leistung, sondern auch der persönlichen Entwicklung sowie den Bezügen zwischen Lernerfolg und verschiedenen Unterrichtsbedingungen gilt. Zu Kriterien des Lernerfolgs wurden auch fachübergreifende Kompetenzen und andere Persönlichkeitsmerkmale wie Selbstvertrauen, Kooperationsfähigkeit, Lern- und Denkstrategien und Bereitschaft zu lebenslangem Lernen gezählt. An der praktischen Durchführung der Erhebung waren in der Schweiz drei Institute beteiligt. Für die italienischsprachige Schweiz war es das Ufficio studi e ricerche in Bellinzona, für die französischsprachige das IRDP in Neuenburg und für die Deutschschweiz das Amt für Bildungsforschung des Kantons Bern, das zugleich für die Gesamtkoordination sorgte.
After "Computers in Education" (cf. Reference No. 2647) and "Reading Literacy" (cf. Reference No. 1160), Switzerland participated in an IEA (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement) project for the third time. The participation in TIMSS (Third International Mathematics and Science Study) was part of the National Research Programme 33 ("Effectiveness of our educational systems"). TIMSS compares the education systems of some 40 countries, including almost all European countries. In an international comparison, the initial aim is to assess the effects of characteristics of education systems such as school structures, class sizes, curricula, etc. on performance in mathematics and the natural sciences. The international study was supplemented in this Swiss project and used for nationally relevant questions. A comparison was made between different types of schools (e.g. vocational schools vs. secondary schools, Matura type vs. Matura type, vocational secondary school vs. vocational school) and between different cantons or regions. With the "plus" (TIMSS+), the researchers wanted to point out that they are not only interested in school and performance, but also in personal development and the relationship between learning success and various teaching conditions. Criteria for learning success also included multidisciplinary competencies and other personality traits such as self-confidence, cooperation, learning and thinking strategies and willingness to lifelong learning. Three institutes were involved in the practical implementation of the survey in Switzerland. For Italian-speaking Switzerland it was the Ufficio studi e ricerche in Bellinzona, for French-speaking Switzerland the IRDP in Neuchâtel and for German-speaking Switzerland the Office for Educational Research of the Canton of Berne, which was also responsible for overall coordination.
