RF-muSR in the gas phase: the muoniated ethyl radical
Radio-frequency muon spin resonance is an exceptional technique for studying free radicals, but it has not been applied to study radicals in the gas phase. In a previous experiment we attempted to detect the muoniated ethyl radical using RF-muSR but we were unable to detect a clear signature due to problems with the PEEK gas cell, which degassed an unknown interfering species and lacked temperature control. The resonance due to the muoniated ethyl radical was very broad and shifted position in response to the ambient temperature. We are developing a new RF cell made of metal with the RF coil mounted inside on an inert ceramic former, and the temperature controlled using non-inductively wound heating tape. We propose to commission this new RF cell by studying the nu12 and nu23 resonances of muonium in nitrogen, and then detect the resonance of the muoniated ethyl radical in nitrogen.
