The purpose of this survey was to identify the people in the UK who might be attracted to Scotland and Wales for holidays in terms of their characteristics, attitudes and holiday requirements; to obtain systematic information on the potential markets for tourism and to contribute to strategic planning for developing the tourism potential within Scotland and Wales.

Attitudinal/Behavioural Questions Number of holidays taken in 1972, number of nights away from home, month holiday began, persons holiday spent with, number of dependents (ages), total cost of holiday, hours spent travelling to holiday area, number of different places stayed at, whether first visit to town/village/area. Type of accommodation, personal rating of holiday, degree of planning for holiday, amount of information sought, whether advance bookings made, number of weekend holidays in past year (month taken), likelihood of weekend holidays during next year, personal rating of importance of holidays. The same information was collected for holidays in 1971. Whether ever visited Wales for a holiday, number of times been abroad, likelihood of taking future holidays abroad, reasons for not taking a second holiday, occupational constraints on taking holidays. Respondents asked to agree/disagree with a number of statements about holidays. Preference for new or known areas, travel arrangements (time and method with reasons). Car ownership, whether car taken on holiday, who drives. Most important aspects of holiday, types of sightseeing enjoyed, whether holiday instruction courses/active recreation ever taken (type), likelihood of attending holiday instruction course in future. Opinion on most beautiful area in Britain, estimated journey time. Parts of Scotland/Wales best for holiday, type of accommodation best/plentiful in Wales/Scotland. Whether parents go on holiday without children. If no holiday taken for last 5 years: when last holiday was taken, reasons. Background Variables Age, sex, marital status, employment status, (for all household members). Occupation, job description, job qualifications, number of weeks paid holiday, age finished full-time education (for head of household only).
