Control of crystallisation is essential for many applications ranging from pharaceuticals to packaging and food preservation, yet remains extremely challenging. Recently we have shown that confinement of crystallising material into the dispersed phase of a microemulsion may direct crystallisation towards the thermodynamically favoured (rather than kinetically favoured) polymorph. This is most probably due to there being insufficient material present in any one location to allow the metastable polymorphs to nucleate. In order to verify this model, we require SANS to verify the stability of microemulsions concurrently with WANS to detect crystallite formation. The large Q-range on SANS2D makes this instrument ideal for this experiment. Glycine will be dispersed in W/O microemulsions and the nucleation process followed along with the large scale structure by temperature control.
