What About YOUth? 2014 (WAY 2014) is a newly-established survey designed to collect robust local authority (LA) level data on a range of health behaviours amongst 15-year-olds. The Children and Young People’s Outcome Forum identified gaps relating to teenagers in the Public Health Outcomes Framework (PHOF). As part of a direct response to this, the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) was commissioned by the Department of Health (DH) to develop the What About YOUth 2014 (WAY 2014) survey. This large-scale survey is designed to provide valuable information on the health and well-being of teenagers, and the findings are intended to help a range of agencies and professionals who work with young people to understand their needs better. The large sample size allows robust results to be produced at a Local Authority (LA) level. Ipsos MORI, assisted by the National Children's Bureau (NCB) conducted the development work for the study and the trial study was undertaken and was completed in early 2014. For queries about the What About YOUth? study, please contact the HSCIC contact centre; telephone 0300 303 5678 or email enquiries@hscic.gov.uk Some of the questions used in the What About YOUth? survey were sourced from established surveys where they had already been proven to work well with young people. These include the Health Survey for England (HSE), the Scottish Schools Adolescent Lifestyle and Substance Use Survey (SALSUS), the Survey of Smoking, Drinking and Drug Use Among Young People (SDD) (see related studies links) and the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) (not currently held at the UK Data Archive). Using similar questions also enables a level of comparison between the different studies. Other additional questions were created specifically for the study to research new areas of interest. For the second edition (April 2016) a new version of the data file was deposited, with one variable, DRKINT, which had been found to contain errors, removed. The variable list has been updated accordingly.
