Aggregation behaviour in solution of cationic conjugated polymers and oligomers

DOI

In the proposed experiments we extend previous work on characterization of aggregates formed by cationic conjugated polymers and oligomers in water. Particular emphasis will be focused on a novel series of oligomers, such as 1,4-bis(4¿-(N,N-bis(6´´-(N,N,N-trimethylammonium)hexyl)amino)-styryl)benzene tetraiodide (DSBNI), which act as models for poly(p-phenylene vinylene)s, and appear to form wormlike micellar species. However, the present evidence for such structures has been obtained using atomic force microscopy on surfaces, and we lack detailed information on aggregate structures in solution. Our objectives are to obtain these details by combining small angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments on both nondeuterated and deuterated oligomers with SAXS and multinuclear NMR data to obtain information on both the structure of aggregates and the factors responsible for their formation.
