At ambient pressure TiCl4 forms a molecular solid consisting of isolated TiCl4 molecules (phase-I). At 0.5 GPa this structure undergoes a transition to phase-II, which is polymeric with 6-coordinate Ti. We were allocated beamtime to collect INS data on the high and low pressure phases of TiCl4 on TOSCA, with the aim of identifying the vibrational modes responsible for the phase transition. While excellent quality data were collected for phase-I, the spectrum of phase-II was weak on account of the low sample volume possible in the gas pressure cell required for this work. We now request time on MAPS with the aim of obtaining a better quality spectrum.
