Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.
The purpose of this study was to examine the financial standing and policies of locally controlled manufacturing establishments in Merseyside and Greater Manchester during 1979-1980. The study aimed to examine the 'birth process' of newer firms and to assess the knowledge and effect of central and local government policies on management operations and production. All these items were considered in relation to the employment of different categories of workers.Interviews were conducted with the managing director and/or owner to collect information on locational characteristics of the establisment (including size, age, mobility, industry-type, branch-plants), background of founders (if post-1965); reasons for moving location (if moved post-1965); investment portfolios; financial standing; customers and competitors; business and technical services; employment characteristics; premises and location; contacts and attitudes to central and local government; and intended moves in location. (The newest establishments included in the study were set up no later than 1975.)Data conversionThese data were converted to current UKDS formats in December 2022. While every effort is made to ensure data integrity, some parts of the data may not match the documentation, due to the age and condition of the original materials. Grid reference variables for the company and head office mentioned in the documentation are not contained within these data.
