During the 19th century, all Royal Navy vessels were required to keep a record of disease. These records were then sent to London, where they were annually condensed into Statistical Reports on the Health of the Royal Navy. These reports provide insight into the epidemiology of the 19th century Royal Navy. These databases are drawn from these reports. The document "Quality Issues in the SRHNs" which is part of the study's guide provides more information on issues impacting on the quality of the data (collection and compilation methods, problems with nomenclature, etc.) The data are presented in two databases. 1. Diseases in the Royal Navy by geographical station, 1871-1897 Data is reported for each of the 9 naval stations. 19 disease categories are reported in the contemporary nomenclature. Each disease category is reported for morbidity, invaliding and mortality. In total, therefore, there are 46 variables for each of the 27 years. 2. Total Force Mortality according to Disease and Non-Disease, 1856-1898 Mortality figures by station for the entire Royal Navy from 1856 to 1898. These are disaggregated by disease and non-disease causes.
