Study of Rebellions Within the Parliamentary Labour Party, 1964-1970

The purpose of this study was to record voting behaviour of members in some divisions for which there was not unanimous support for the government position from the Parliamentary Labour Party, plus background information on Parliament and individual MPs.

Attitudinal/Behavioural Questions Voting behaviour is recorded for members in 51 divisions as follows: not rebellious', 'voted against the Government', 'abstained from voting' and 'not in House'. Issues included: prices and incomes, Rhodesia sanctions, defence, Common Market, supply of arms to South Africa, Commonwealth immigration, industrial relations, prescription charges, Lords reform . . . etc. Parliamentary background information: political seniority (i.e. when entered Parliament - 7 categories), particulars of attendance during 1964 - 1966 and 1966 - 69 parliamentary terms (i.e. 'not in House',full term', or 'incomplete term'), sponsorship (9 categories), percentage size of majority, region, whether county or borough, whether MP has been a member of Government at any stage 1964 - 69, number of rebellions member has been involved in. Also included is a `run' of Finer's list of the 50 most left wing MP's in 1955, and of the Tribune list 1967 Manifesto (in each case whether MP: 'in Parliament on list', 'in Parliament not on list' or 'not in Parliament'). Background Variables Sex, age, cohort, education and occupation (12 categories).
