Field Induced Metamagnetic transition close to Ferromagnetic Quantum Critical Points

DOI

This proposal addresses the formation of a metamagnetic phase transition in PrPtAl. PrPtAl exhibits induced moment magnetism where singlet-mixing is stabilised by inter-site exchange. The singlets present in PrPtAl are categorised into 2 types with unlike singlet mixing responsible for zero field magnetism. The application of field along the hard magnetic axis can induce same-type mixing that competes with the formation of the zero field magnetic state and can be used to drive the system to a novel type of quantum critical point. The proposal aims to explore this physics by measuring changes in the dispersion of magnetic excitations as a function of field to compare the changes in dynamics that occur approaching the magnetically driven quantum transition with the temperature driven transition.
