This study will focus on the structural investigations of the bilayers formed on silicon substrates in which the outer leaf consists of DOPE/LPS mixtures. We aim is to achieve precise structural information on determining the conformation of the polysaccharide (PS) component. We will study LPS with various lengths of carbohydrate chains. This will allow to determine lipid A packing in the bilayer. The water profile, as a function of distance through the bilayer into the polysaccharide region, will be of primary interest. Once the basic structures will be characterized, the ultimate aim will be to introduce a laboratory synthesized ten amino acid protein fragment. This is a fragment of the cystic fibrosis trans-membrane conductance regulator protein. The aim of the present research is to determine where the peptide is located and the perturbation produced in the bilayer of the LPS.
