English brass letters form the earliest remains from decorated tombslabs of the period 1250 - 1350AD. The letters can be classified in several stylistic groups, and a certain amount ofstandardisation is expected. We propose to study 30 brass letters and 5 reconstructions in order toinvestigate the phase composition of the objects and their texture. The outcome of this study willallow insight in the production of the materials used in the decoration of early English monuments. The evolution of the material use will be determined in relation to stylistic dating. Possibleworkshop identification by means of material use and production will give, for the first time, quantitative scientific support for the art historians interpretation of these objects.
