The search for ALC resonances in TRP-TYR: pioneering spatial and temporal resolution in electron transfer measurements
Electron transfer (ET) processes in peptides and proteins are key steps in the functioning of several natural enzymes including DNA photolyase and ribonucleitide reductase, which contribute to DNA synthesis and repair, and photosystem II, the heart of photosynthesis. There is an increasing interest in the role of amino acid radicals as intermediates in ET, which is typically measured by flash photolysis. This only measures the average lifetime of the ET process, offering no information on the route that the electron takes or the time of each individual step. Making use of ALC resonances, which has spatial resolution due to the different adducts having well separated resonances, in time-resolved laser excitation experiments is unique in that it offers both spatial and temporal information on ET processes to be obtained. This proposal is the first step in this pioneering work.
