Marine primary producers in a future climate: an eco-evolutionary approach combining experimental ecology and metagenomics

The goal of the study was to investigate potential temperature adaptation in Skeletonema marinoi during the last 60 years in a coastal ecosystem, SW Finland. We resurrected resting stages of S. marinoi from the seafloor from geologically dated sediment samples corresponding to the decades 1960s, 1990s and 2010s. We performed growth experiments using the resurrected strains across different temperatures. We retrieved RNA samples from the beginning of the stationary phase to perform RNA-seq and investigate potential differential gene expression between treatments and strains orginating from different decades.
