Self-Organisation of Phospholipids on Au Electrodes

DOI

This experiment is part of a programme to study the effect of applied electric fields on the structure of biomimetic films formed at Au electrodes, with emphasis on understanding the role of applied electric field on molecular arrangements and the resulting effect on macroscopic properties. The objective of this experiment is to continue our study of a bilayer of DMPS, a lipid predominantly found in the inner leaflet of cell membranes. Our previous experiment demonstrated that the applied electric field affected the structure of the lipid film. We wish now to focus in on the details of this structural transition, to determine the degree of solvent penetration through the film during the process. This behaviour is important for understanding electroporation phenomena and for interpretation of electrochemical and infrared measurements currently in progress.
