RF μSR in the gas phase: understanding a ¿null¿ result
We have made a significant effort to develop Radio Frequency μSR (RF μSR) as a technique for spectroscopy of organic radicals in the gas phase. Realising this method would be particularly attractive as both muon and nuclear hyperfine couplings can then be directly and accurately measured to identify muoniated radicals formed in gases, and it can readily be applied to systems that lack nuclear moments. Unfortunately, despite considerable work to advance this complex experiment, we have thus far been unable to measure convincing signals for a gas phase radical system. At this stage we are unsure whether the lack of signal is the result of an experimental error or an, as yet, unidentified physical effect that is compromising the measurement. To investigate this, we propose condensing both isobutene and ethene to search for RF resonances from radicals formed in the liquid phase.
