Although the first patents involving the nickel positive electrode are more than 100 years old, our understanding of the phases involved in this system is still not complete. As an example, only very recently the crystal structure of b-NiOOH has been determined, and turned out to not to have the same layer stacking sequence of b-Ni(OH)2, as previously believed. The aim of the proposed work is thus to extend the studies carried out by our group for the b-NiOOH phase to the gamma phase, whose exact structure is still not known. We would like to combine neutron diffraction with inelastic neutron scattering to determine the structure of a sample of HxNay(H2O)zNiO2. Understanding the details of the local proton environments and how these change in the various polymorphs is crucial to improving these materials and obtain improved nickel based batteries.
