This experiment will use high resolution neutron diffraction to investigate the crystal and magnetic structure of the cobalt adipate framework, Co(CO2(CH2)4CO2), at lower temperature and to examine and interpret the apparent unusual monoclinic to orthorhombic phase transition upon cooling. This study will also enable the magnetic structure of this compound to be accurately determined. The magnetic properties of framework compounds have been of great interest in recent years, although examination of their magnetic structures are extremely rare and this would represent the first magnetic structure determine of a framework containing tetrahedrally coordinated Co atoms. The complex structure of this material and the need to very accurately examine the behaviour of the monoclinic distortion requires access to the extremely high resolution neutron diffractometery provided by HRPD.
