Li-diffusion dynamics in high voltage fluoride-containing cathodes

DOI

Research on positive insertion electrodes for high performance batteries has seen immense interest in fluoride containing compounds, since higher operating potentials can be achieved leading to important potent applications in high energy density demanding technologies. Unclear up to now are the Li-diffusion mechanisms ongoing in this class of materials and we propose the use of muons to locally probe the Li diffusion dynamics. We are particularly interested in determining if the presence of these fluoride ions in the structure positively influences the Li-diffusion mechanism. We will study a series of fluoride containing electrodes with increasing operating potentials to systematically probe this phenomenon. The results obtained will open up a new field of study, namely the evaluation of fluoride-containing compounds as energy storage electrodes.
