Conformation of the origins of variant selection and high ductility in an industrial scale TRIP steel
Recently, Nippon Steel Corporation (NSC) developed an industrial ferrous alloy showing transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) and large ductility and strength. It has been claimed that the high ductility and strength of this alloy is a result of the TRIP phenomena. This proposal seeks to determine if this is the case, using in-situ neutron diffraction during cyclic loading. By undertaking the same test at three temperatures, resulting in varying levels of TRIP, the effect of TRIP on the alloy properties can be determined while continuosly monotoring the extent of transformation using neutrion diffraction. The martensite that forms as part of the TRIP effect in this material is academically interesting in terms of variant selection. Thus, developing an understanding of the effect of stress on the variant formation in this alloy will also be pursued.
