How polymer functionality influences multilayer formation at the interface in polyelectrolyte / surfactant mixtures.

Spontaneous multilayer formation at interfaces from surfactant self assembly is emerging as an important structural signature associated with a wide range of potential applications and biological function. Recent neutron reflectivity, NR, studies have demonstrated their occurrence in mixtures of the anionic surfactant SDS and polyamines at very low polymer and surfactant concentrations. The multilayer formation depends upon polymer architecture (branched or linear) and MW, and on the nature of the polymer - surfactant interaction. We now wish to explore specifically the nature of the polymer -surfactant interaction in more detail using an analogous polymer, poly(2-ethyl oxazoline), PEtOx, which has a modified functionality compared with the polyamines. We request beam time on INTER to pursue this important and complementary aspect of the study.
