As non-teleost actinopterygians, sturgeons have not undergone a teleost-specific whole-genome duplication, however, several polyploidization events have taken place within the sturgeon family. The availability of the Atlantic sturgeon genome could offer a great opportunity to investigate the evolution of polyploid genomes, although to date there is no published reference genome for this species. Therefore, the goal of this project is to sequence and assemble the Atlantic sturgeon. For this, a juvenile female specimen originated from St. John's River (Canada) was sampled at Fischzucht Rhoenforelle (Gersfeld, Germany). Genomic DNA was extracted from red blood cells and paired-end libraries were prepared and sequenced using an Illumina HiSeq2500 instrument.
