Investigations of some ruthenates with extended superexchange pathways

DOI

The superexchange interaction - in which the intervening oxygen mediates magnetism between two partially filled d shells- is well described by the semi-empirical Goodenough-Kanamori rules. Recently, a few material classes have come to the fore, where magnetism is mediated solely through -O-O- bonds. These systems of the form A3A'RuO6 ( where A = Ca, or Sr, and A' = Li or Na) with extended superexchange pathways are interesting, since they mandate a revisit of the Goodenough Kanamori rules, and also shows appreciably large transition temperatures in spite of the inherent frustration dictated by the lattice. We propose a temperature dependent investigation of these systems using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering, to critically evaluate their magnetic structures, as well as the nature of magnetic excitation's in these materials.
