Incorporation of PAN-pyrene swollen micelles in crosslinked polyelectrolyte films

DOI

We have been studying the formation of solid polymer-surfactant films at the air-solution interface formed from cationic surfactants with PEI. We wish to use the micelles encapsulated in the films as hosts for metal ion sensors based on the PAN/pyrene micelle-based sensor system incorporated within the hydrogel films. To create robust films which can be removed intact from the surface of the solution where they form, we have found it necessary to crosslink the PEI component using ethyleneglycol diglycidyl ether. High crosslinking density was shown in previous work to affect the mesostructure in the film, so here we wish to investigate the effect of crosslinking on the pyrene swollen micelles containing PAN that are encapsulated within our films. This is essential to understand the link between film structure and sensor performance.
