The structural phase transitions of Ammonia Borane, an invetigation of the dynamics with INS

DOI

Ammonia Borane (AB), NH3BH3, was first synthesised in the 1950s and has now become the focus of a world wide research program with regards to its potential as a hydrogen store. This interest is generated by several key properties which fulfil many of the DoE criteria for H storage including its high hydrogen content (19wt%), curious intermolecular interactions which result in its stability under atmospheric conditions. There are discrepancies between the studies about the exact atom positions and unit cell dimensions which cannot be accounted for by different run temperatures or deuterium isotope effects. We intend to measure the spectra of AB as function of temperature across the 90K anomaly and across the phase transition tha occurs at 225K. We will use a perdeuterated sample to reduce the effects of the Debye-Waller factor in the spectra.
