Studying the limits of the quantum Griffiths phase in Ni,V

DOI

A randomly diluted ferromagnet has its transition temperature Tc suppressed to a quantum critical point. Between the Tc of the diluted material and that of the undiluted material exists the Griffiths phase. Examples of materials that exhibit the appropriate quantum critical endpoint are rare, since other phases generally intervene. Recently the material Ni,V was found to show an appropriate phase diagram and scaling between M, H, and T fitting theoretical predictions for the quantum Griffiths phase. Here we propose to study a sample where the V content appears to suppress long-range magnetic order entirely, leaving only superparamagnetism and possibly cluster glass formation. Muons are uniquely sensitive in studying these disordered magnetic phases with small magnetic moments and here we propose to investigate the spin fluctuations in these phases.
