Novel protophane and cyclophane surfactants

DOI

Novel Gemini surfactants (protophanes and cyclophanes) have been synthesised as model biological anion receptors, and their critical micelle concentrations determined by surface tension. The molecular structure embodies long alkyl chains of various lengths grafted to macrocyclic imidazolium groups. Homologous series of each family have been prepared. Here we wish to quantify the micelle size and shape for a series of chain length for both series, varying the counterion. This study will complement the CMC data, and the on-going fluorescence and NMR analyses.
