Whole-Genome Resequencing of Takifugu snyderi

After the completion of the human genome, fugu (Takifugu rubripes), also called tiger pufferfish, was the second vertebrate to have its genome sequenced. Interestingly Takifugu species have undergone explosive speciation in the last 2-5 My, resulting in about 20 species that exhibit an impressive diversity in morphology, life history, physiology, and behavior. It is notable that the diversity includes sex-determining systems. Thus, Takifugu species are an attractive system for studying the pattern and process of genomic divergence in relation to the diversification of sex-determining systems. The aim of the study was to perform whole-genome resequencing of a Takifugu species and to identify variants for downstream analyses of regions associated to the diversification of sex-determining systems.
