Pure Ca3Co2O6 is a model system of ferromagnetic Ising chains arranged antiferromagnetically on a triangular net. Furthermore this system has aroused great interest because at low temperatures several steps, equally spaced in magnetic field, appear in the magnetization. Recently we were able to determine the zero-field magnetic ground state of Ca3Co2O6 using GEM instrument. The GEM data also revealed that the long-range magnetic order coexists with a shorter-range order. It is our intention to carry out a powder neutron diffraction investigation in order to understand how the magnetic field affects the long and the short range magnetic ordering and to determine if the phase separation is somehow related with the step-like behaviour.
