Crystal field excitations on Sm based pyrochlores

DOI

The A2B2O7 pyrochlore family, where A is a rare earth ion and B=Ti, Sn, is one of the most prolific series of compounds presenting magnetic frustration. The geometric Fd-3m cubic lattice constrains the magnetic moments to arrange in configurations to which the minimum free energy of all the competing interactions cannot be minimised. The Sm based pyrochlores are relatively unknown due to the high neutron absorption cross-section of the samarium ions, what complicates the magnetic characterisation of the material. We have sinthesized isotope enriched samples and some curious previous results show that Sm based pyrochlores are worth being studied.
