Bramwell et al. have provided an elegant demonstration of dynamics in magnetic monopoles in spin ice measured by muons implanted inside the sample. However, it is likely that the signal observed in these experiments results from the field distribution exterior to the sample; such an interpretation is supported by calculations of the dipole field at muon sites inside and outside the sample. This experiment is aimed at testing this hypothesis by studying single crystal samples of Dy2Ti2O7 which are arranged in such a way as to maximize the contribution from the exterior field. The aim of this experiment is to understand in detail the observations of Bramwell et al. and to resolve the controversy that has arisen between their results and those reported recently by Dunsiger et al.
