Ba2CuTeO6 is a recently discovered S=1/2 spin ladder system containing Cu2+ ladders. Our experiments indicate that it is extremely close to the theoretically predicted quantum critical point (QCP) for the coupled spin ladder system. Magnetic susceptibility data shows that Ba2CuTeO6 displays ideal ladder behaviour down approximately 25 K. Below 25 K the behaviour deviates from that of a ladder and a cusp is seen at 16 K. NMR, specific heat and neutron diffraction do not detect any long-range ordering in the system suggesting the cusp is a sign of marginal ordering. Along with signs of unquenched excess entropy at low temperature from specific heat this indicates proximity to the QCP . In this proposal we plan to investigate the spin excitations in Ba2CuTeO6 over their full band width, establish signatures of quantum criticality in the dispersion and search for the presence of a spin gap
