This proposal is centered on the preparation of nanoscale fibres prepared by electrospinning and is the focus of the final year PhD programme of Saeed Mohan. These experiments seek to establish the relationships between the shape and size of polymers chains in solution and the conformation of those chains in the ressultant electrospun fibres. We will use SANS coupled with deuterium labelled mixtures in a range of solution concentrations to extract both the radius of gyration and the correlation length and compare these with the results of the measurements of the radius of gyration in the nanofibres spun from equivalent solutions. We will prepare aligned arrays of electrospun fibres so that we can evaluate the extent of chain deformation and preferred orientation during electrospinning.
