Catalysis in Hydrogen-Bond Rich Porous Organic Materials

Hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) interactions are essential in biological and chemical processes, particularly in reactions catalysed by enzymes and small-molecule catalysts. Enzymatic processes are highly depend on the properties of the reaction environment, such as pH, presence of ions, organic solvents, and other proteins in cell media. Characterization and rationalization of relevant H-bondings in ‘active sites’ is critical in designing and synthesizing new systems. Given that confined space of such organic materials is rich in H-bond donors and acceptors, the aim of this proposal is to obtain an insight into the role of H-bonding interactions between the NH3 molecules and the organic porous material using neutron scattering spectroscopy. Following this first step, this research will be extended to the incorporation of enzymes into the peptide-based porous organic polymers (PAAs, PIs).
