We wish to determine the effect of various stabilisers on anisotropic pigment particles that are being developed for use in liquid crystal composites. We will investigate the adsorbtion of stabilizer onto reconstructed flat pigment surfaces using neutron reflection. Various concentrations of polymer will be added to the dodecane in contact with the pigment film and polymer coverage and layer thickness will be determined. Solutions of short chain stabiliser molecules in organic solvent will also be prepared , again determining both the surface coverage and thickness. The overall aim is to establish why some stabilizers produce high orientational ordering of the particles and some do not.
