High pressure and high temperature stabilized bismuth based multiferroic related compounds: Bi2MTiO6 (M=Co, Ni)

DOI

The new compound Bi2CoTiO6 is synthesized using high pressure - high temperature techniques. Its properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction, magnetic measurements, and scanning calorimetry. The related and known Bi2NiTiO6 will be studied for comparison. Since the crystal structure for these compounds is non-centrosymmetric, special multiferroic properties may emerge. We will for the first time determine the detailed crystal structure of Bi2CoTiO6 and benefit from neutrons which make a detailed description feasible while complementary X-ray data will be dominated by strong Bi-scattering. Of particular importance is to measure data at low temperatures. This will allow us to describe the ordering of magnetic moments, for Bi2CoTiO6 and Bi2NiTiO6. From characterizations done in the home lab, we know that magnetic transitions occur. Hence, we will collect data at several temperatures
