The use of M. beryllina as a model species will help determine environmental stressors pose to organisms with influenced sex determination, such as turtles and crocodilians, many of which are protected due to population declines. Understanding the impacts of anthropogenic stressors on these organisms will help inform management strategies as human impacts become more prevalent. Sequencing of the M. beryllina genome is crucial to the continued use of this model species and will inform future projects using molecular endpoints, including the addition of epigenetic approaches.
