Ever more stringent environmental regulations have driven the automotive industry to strive for light weight solutions in automotive body and chassis applications, without compromise of passenger safety. It is believed that the formation of nano precipitates due to the addition of micro alloying elements in steels results in mechanical property and performance improvements in steels. However, these precipitates can coarsen overly quickly during the manufacturing process, which could degrade the strength of materials significantly. One possible solution shown in the literature is the addition of Mo. However, the mechanism by which Mo affects the coarsening kinetics of Ti/Mo carbides has not been quantitatively validated. The paucity quantitative data has left an open question for model validation, which quantitative measurement of nano-precipitates growth kinetins using SANS will answer.
