Mosquitoes play an ecological role, serving as pollinators and as a food source for other wildlife. However, mosquitoes are among the most intensely studied creatures on the planet due to their role in disease transmission, serving as vectors for various pathogens. There are over 3,500 identified species of mosquitoes, and they are found on every continent except Antarctica. Genetic information is essential to uncover their diversity and resolve bio-complexes. In many cases, only partial cytochrome oxidase 1 (COX1, COI) sequences are available. Our goal is to provide complete mitochondrial genetic information related to European mosquitoes. This project could help to better understand the evolutionary relationships of native European mosquitoes.
