The magnetic properties of a Holmium single ion magnetic system will be studied using implanted muons. The system is based on a polyoxometallate cluster ion that provides good isolation between magnetic sites and extremely long spin coherence times have been observed in previous epr studies. A series of three avoided level crossing features are expected due to the hyperfine coupling between the electronic and nuclear spins of the Ho ion. Preliminary muSR data in taken on a powder sample in the transverse field configuraration at PSI is consistent with the expected features. The present proposal is for a more detailed study optimised for the longitudinal field configuration on single crystal samples, aiming to see the resonances, extract quantitative information from them and study the effect of proton spin fluctuations on the Holmium by comparing deuterated and non-deuterated samples.
