Low-Temperature Structural Phase Transitions in GeV4S8

DOI

The defect thiospinel, GeV4S8 adopts a cubic structure at room temperature (space group F-43m). We have identified a new monoclinic phase of this material at 2K, which may be described in the space group F2 (alternative setting of C2). As this is not a sub-group of F-43m, it suggests that there are one or more intermediate phases that exist between the high-temperature cubic phase and the low-temperature monoclinic structure. We have obtained preliminary evidence of one intermediate phase during a previous allocation of beam time. We now wish to use high-resolution powder neutron diffraction to explore in detail the low-temperature structural changes in GeV4S8. By collecting data over small temperature increments we will follow the evolution of the unit cell, identify additional structural phase transitions and characterise intermediate structures between the monoclinic and cubic phases.
