No diffraction studies have specifically aimed to study the (hkl) specific strain in polycrystals under the application of pure shear. A technique is proposed that has been implemented at NRSF2 (ORNL), which is able to measure the shear response of individual hkl planes from d-spacing changes in rosette configurations. We now wish to measure the lattice strain response when subjecting a cylinder to pure shear into the plastic region, using this technique at ENGIN-X. A metastable austenitic stainless (TRIP) steel will be studied, where fcc austenite transforms to hcp and bcc under applied strain. Multiple hkl responses will be recorded to determine the corresponding Shear Moduli (Ghkl). It is further proposed to record the transmitted Bragg edge spectrum (using MCP detector), which can be used to spatially resolve evolution of phase transformation. A custom load frame will be brought.
