Biofilms on synthetic polymers in the marine environment

We incubated nine different synthetic polymer films and glass in situ for 15 months in a seawater flow through system with North Sea waters. To determine whether microorganisms colonizing different synthetic polymers are distinct from each other and from other inert hard substrates 16S and 18S rRNA gene tag sequencing was performed.
