[2,2]-Paracyclophane, C16H16, is a small molecule containing both sp2 and sp3 hybridized carbon atoms. Despite of its apparent simplicity, its solid state structure and temperature dependent behavior is highly complex. The molecule has severely bent aromatic rings which are forced together closer than their van der Waals radii would suggest feasible. Even more interesting is the ongoing discussion over temperature dependent phase transitions.Despite extensive X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic studies, the low temperature phase is not yet understood in detail. We propose to perform combined inelastic neutron scattering and Raman spectroscopy at TOSCA at 15, 50, 60 and 100 K to study the vibrational motions in the compound to help elucidating the phase transitions present at 45 K and 60 K.
