We propose to carry out an inelastic neutron scattering experiment at LET to investigate the excitations in the quantum spin ice Yb2Ti2O7. In contrast to other single crystal samples of Yb2Ti2O7 studied using neutrons, the single crystal we plan to use for this work undergoes a transition to long-range ferromagnetic order at 0.24 K. We believe that the inconsistencies in the data obtained previously using different samples are due to varying levels of defects in the samples. Our single crystal sample is almost defect free. We expect to observe ferromagnetic spin waves at zero applied field below 240 mK, and exotic quantum excitations in our high quality crystal. Two crystal orientations will be investigated.
