The spontaneous formation of multilayer structures at surfaces and interfaces from self-assembly in mixed surfactant and in polymer / surfactant mixtures are being increasingly recognised as an important structural signature associated with a wide range of technological applications and biological function. Their potential applications in detergency and many aspects of soft lubrication (hair and fabric conditioners) and biolubrication are receiving much current interest. We (Oxford, STFC, Unilever) have now embarked upon a major programme in this area, with EPSRC funding for 2 students and a PDRA to work on the experimental and theoretical aspects, and in which the kinetics of formation / dissolution is a major element. We request here NR beam time on INTER to complete the study of the kinetics of surfactant multilayer formation and dissolution at the air-water interface.
