Temperature and environment dependence of the isotope effect in muonated radicals

DOI

We plan to measure the hyperfine constants for both the muon and the equivalent hydrogen atom in a small muonated radical using time-differential ALC. We will follow this as a function of temperature to observe the isotope effect on the vibrational states. Measurements will be made in solutions giving different environments (aqueous - polar and hydrocarbon - non polar). The work will lead on to locating such molecules in practical multi-phase systems such as surfactants, giving partition fractions and exchange or diffusion rates.
