It is proposed to use ENGIN-X for proof-of-concept investigations of BCC Fe (possibly also hex. Mg and FCC Al) alloys under multi axial loading, while simultaneously acquiring the transmission spectrum. A unique portable loading system will be used to apply in-situ loading in tension, torsion and combination of both. The response of a sample¿s lattice planes to torsion and combined loading is not well understood and important for engineering problems, since most materials are subjected to complex loading and often fail in a combination of loading conditions that involve principal stress rotations rather than in pure tension or compression. A successful outcome will have significant impact on a) understanding of strain response to torsion and combined loading and b) pushing the development of a neutron imaging coupled scattering technique which can spatially map localized strains.
